Obviously today we celebrate Juneteenth. However, today is also an interesting date in football history: On June 19, 1943, the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers temporarily merged due to player shortages caused by World War II, thereby creating a new team known as “The Steagles.” Neither teams head coach wanted to step down, so Philadelphia’s Greasy Neale and Pittsburgh’s Walt Kiesling became co-head coaches, even though the two men hated each other. The Steagles ended their only season with a record of 5-4-1.
