In honor of Greenspoint Mall finally closing for good, I have a little story to tell: As some of you may remember, I was the lead singer of a ska band in high school (yes, really). Most of us ended up going to Texas A&M together, one guy went to Rice, and three of the others were still seniors when we left for college. Anyway, during the fall of my freshman year, our band played its final show ever… at Greenspoint Mall. I have no idea how we got invited to play at this thing. But it was some kind of charity event put on by the mayor’s office where poor people could come to get groceries, vaccinations, etc., and there was also live music out in the parking lot. Anyway, we played our full set, but let’s just say that a bunch of nerdy white kids playing ska wasn’t exactly… the favored music style of this crowd. Only one person actually paid attention to us, and it was this random homeless guy who stood right in front of the stage dancing by himself. And that was the end. We never played together again.
